At Transcendence Wines, we are proud to work with a handful of the finest Santa Barbara County vineyards to produce our small portfolio. We value our relationships with these talented winegrowers and their willingness to work with us in our pursuit of making the finest possible wines.
Larner Vineyard – Ballard Canyon
Larner Vineyard was founded by Stevan and Christine Larner in 1997, and today the property is managed by a second generation of Larner family. The Larners grow 34 acres of exceptional grapes, with a focus on Rhône varietals. Our section of Syrah is grown at the top of a beautiful south-facing hillside, which gives a perfect exposure for Syrah. The vines rest on a 7-foot deep bed of sand with clay pan underneath. The clone is 174, which was isolated from the Northern Rhône. We love this clone’s expressive smoke and meat aromatics, as well as its richness, texture, minerality and acid structure.
Lafond Vineyard – Santa Rita Hills
Planted in 1971, Lafond Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in Santa Barbara County. To say we love this vineyard would be an understatement—Sara and I got married at Lafond. As a winemaker, I have had the pleasure of working with Lafond’s grapes for years. The sections of Lafond that we work with feature east/west-facing rows that rest on a hillside plateau, just above the Santa Ynez River. We are proud to source both clone 1 Syrah and Martin Ray clone Pinot Noir from this historic property.
Zotovich Vineyard – Santa Rita Hills
Located in the middle part of the northern Santa Rita Hills, Zotovich Vineyard is farmed by the Zotovich family and renowned vineyard manager Jeff Newton (whose other clients include Beckmen Vineyards, Stolpman, Jonata and Brewer-Clifton). Adding to the site’s pedigree is its location next to such renowned vineyards as Babcock and Melville. The soils at Zotovich are sandy, and the row orientations are predominantly north/south. The Zotovich Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills. The clone 76 Chardonnay from Zotovich offers a crisp and vibrant expression of the varietal with lovely aromatics and pure fruit elements. We also source small quantities of excellent Pinot Noir from Zotovich.
La Encantada Vineyard
La Encantada Vineyard is one of the westernmost vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills and also one of the coolest sites in the region. The vineyard is planted on a ridge, which straddles the Santa Ynez River Valley and is open to the full impact of the cooling afternoon maritime breezes. Our block is planted to clone 115 with north-south facing rows that sit on a slight west-facing shelf. Upon first walking the rows with Jeff Newton, I knew that I wanted to source fruit from this famed vineyard.
Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard
Located in the middle part of the northern Santa Rita Hills, Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard is farmed by the renowned viticulturist Ben Merz who is widely recognized as the best in the Santa Rita Hills. The vineyard is owned by Foley estates and it is one of the most picturesque vineyards around. Adding to the site’s pedigree is its location next to such renowned vineyards as Babcock and Melville. The soils at Rancho Santa Rosa are sandy, and the row orientations are predominantly north/south. The clone 4 Chardonnay from Rancho Santa Rosa offers a crisp and vibrant expression of the varietal with lovely aromatics and pure fruit elements.
Harrison Clarke Vineyard
Harrison Clarke Vineyard is located in the extraordinary Purisima Hills, in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, just north of Santa Barbara. The Santa Ynez Valley is the result of a distinctive east-west mountain range formation. The region’s perfect union of soil, wind and sun make this vineyard one of my favorites in the Ballard Canyon. The distinguishing soil that sets this Purisima Hill site apart is its limestone subsoil combined with clay and clay loam soils. In this special vineyard, we work with a tiny, prized 1.5-acre section.
